The filmmakers, focusing on the human endeavor, captured the beauty and impact of the details of their subjects, while never loosing sight of the big picture. Taking us into a world where dedicated investigators attempt to conduct cutting edge scientific research using the tools of yesterday. An enterprise as challenging for the filmmakers as for the research group. The grand prize of AFO52 goes to Lake Vostok, At the Mountains of Madness, directed by Ekaterina Eremenko.

Academia Film Olomouc AFO is currently one of the most important European festivals in the area of popular science film. It aims to present science as an attractive, dynamic and diverse sector through films charting natural, humanities and social science disciplines. The festival takes place in April in Olomouc. It originated in 1966. It focuses not only on current productions, but reviews, and revives the history of the genre in special program sections. Each year, a dominant topic brings together films and guests from all over the world, presenting science as a thrilling adventure.
The best international popular-scientific achievement has become a Russian image of Lake Vostok for life research team in the middle of one of the most legendary areas of the southern hemisphere. “On the basis of the decision of the jury, this year we awarded the prize primarily to independent creators, of which I have a huge joy!
