Aleksandr Melnik was born on June 11th, 1958, at the Krasny Partizan settlement in the Sverdlovsky rayon of the Voroshilovgradskaya Region (today, the Luhansk Region of Ukraine), in the USSR.

In 1980, he graduated from the Odessa Hydrometeorological Institute as a hydrology engineer. He worked on a polar station in the Laptevykh Sea (Tiksi Administration of the Hydrometeorological Service). He took part in hydrological expeditions in the Arctic and Pacific Oceans.

In 1980—1982, he was a conscript in the Soviet Army.

In 1984—1992, he was a reporter in the Sovietskaya Moldaviya and Vecherni Kishinyov newspapers. He wrote books (Hot Sampling, Crazy Mirror) and plays.

In 1992—1997, he was the general director of the Andreyevski flag Publishers (Moscow).

In 1992—2006, he was the President of the public agency Foundation of St. Andrew the First-Called.

In 2001—2006, he was the President of the public agency Center of Russian National Glory.

Since 2006, he works as a film director (Novaya Zemlya, 2008; The Territory, 2014).
